Ding Shenglan (@小企鹅吖) is the Society’s Principal Artistic Adviser. In this programme with Troy Tang, she shares piano performance, Debussy pedalling and reflections on musical learning. The original video description places her in the final stage of undergraduate study at Tianjin Conservatory of Music at the time of recording.
From playing to conversation
Two extended playing demonstrations preserve the continuity of performance. A roughly three-minute segment focuses on Debussy pedalling, followed by an interview of about twenty minutes. Viewers can start with the music, the technique discussion or the conversation.
08TEACHING, RESEARCH & PRACTICE
Begin with a musical question.
Research directions retained · Several in-person plans on hold
The teaching and research vision, developed with group head Liu Yutong (Tong Jie) and collaborators, welcomes students in performance, composition and music technology. Recording is one part of a wider process of learning, creating and collaborating. These remain research and practice directions. Courses and in-person exchanges that depend on the chair’s return to China are paused, with no resumption date.
Performance & repertoire
Exploring interpretation, tone, phrasing and ensemble work through playing, listening and discussion.
Teaching & course development
Developing masterclasses and the working concepts of “middle classes” and “small classes” around the dissertation’s themes of cross-sensory metaphor and AI-assisted piano performance teaching. These are proposed formats; their scope, structure and roles remain to be developed. Teaching exchanges that depend on the chair’s return to China are on hold. Tutors, participants, dates and access arrangements remain unconfirmed.
Composition, scores & rehearsal
Connecting composition and performance through part preparation, technical markings, rehearsal notes and version management.
Music engineering & technology
Bringing recording, editing, mixing, audiovisual production and music-analysis tools into collaborative projects, supporting interpretation, teaching and performance.
