From personal questions to shared music
Troy Tang’s interests span music, history, politics and culture. Writing helps him organise experience and formulate questions; music brings those questions into performance, interviews and exchanges with collaborators. Education, individual differences and how people express and understand one another’s experience recur in his essays, fictional projects and research.
His programme with Ding Shenglan, Light Comes from the Fingertips, brought together performance, Debussy pedalling and conversation. In his programme notes, he recalled their rapport in pacing and timing, and considered a series and multi-camera production.
In May 2026, Troy Tang worked with a flautist who entered Wuhan Conservatory of Music with the highest flute result in her admission cohort. A focus of the exchange was a solo audition featuring La traviata repertoire. Members have also explored chamber-music rehearsals and collaborative projects; further formats will develop alongside the German project.
These experiences connect with his research: from pedalling, gesture, tone and phrasing to different interpretations of a work, and to the way artists and orchestras develop interpretations through sustained collaboration. He seeks to turn observations into analysis and shared discussion, combining listening, score study, comparison and practical experiments at the instrument.
Concert attendance and autograph session
Troy Tang attended the Singapore Symphony Orchestra concerts on 8 and 9 October 2026. At the post-concert autograph session on 9 October, he took a photograph with Chloe Chua and handed her a letter. This was participation in the public autograph session, rather than a backstage visit.
Correspondence before the visit
Before the visit, SSO confirmed the autograph-session arrangements and assisted with practical questions. Chloe Chua’s management also responded to DMAC’s artistic and research proposals, leaving scope to revisit ideas at a more suitable time. These exchanges form part of the project’s background; they do not constitute an agreed collaboration.
He then discussed the visit, its relevance to his dissertation and its possible impact on classes with professors based outside China, including Chinese academics, receiving their support. He incorporated the experience into his research plan, examining how individual performers and artistic organisations establish contact, exchange perspectives and develop musical interpretations through collaboration. Concert attendance, correspondence and opportunities for personal contact all contribute to that research process.
Records of the visit are available on the official Xiaohongshu and Instagram accounts.
Troy Tang and Wang Shuyi have confirmed their collaboration for the April 2027 German project. Work is underway, beginning with a small concert or music festival, recording and online publication, and extending into research as the project develops. Research funding and project sponsorship are current priorities.
